Distracteurs de couleurs
The exhibition Distracteurs de couleurs brings together nine paintings created in 2020 and presents a body of work on regular stretchers that I had long set aside. Monochromes and two-tone structures served as the starting point for each work in this series. Already fascinated by the result of this initial stage — by the presence of these expanses of colour — I chose to preserve space for them and to favour the rarity of gestures over their accumulation.
Created in immediacy, without a predetermined plan beyond a few initial parameters, these new images tend toward drawing. At times, I used the brush like a pencil, depositing paint through friction. I was also interested in the way lines settle onto the surface, in the tensions created by diagonals, and in the delineation of forms in space and the precision of their contours.
The visual components respond to one another, confront one another, and compete with each other; they burst outward in every direction and disperse across monochrome and two-tone surfaces. A tension emerges between the pictorial elements, which become both distractors and points of reference within the spatial organization of the works. Carried by the internal dynamics of the paintings, the viewer’s gaze is constantly redirected toward other elements in presence. Through these shifts of attention, certain recurring forms act as markers within the perceptual experience of the exhibition.
